Riding back in the dusk(Anne M Carson)

There’s no black like
the black of trees
silhouetted against sunset;
matt, boot-black black.
Baked-on Bakelite black,
back-lit by the sky’s citrus
tones – mandarin, orange
and lemon morphing
into persimmon-red,
magenta. The colours
zing into the sky, into
the eager eye. Light flares
out as through an aperture,
intensified by restriction.
Tonight, riding in tandem
through the blazing dark,
we’re on the threshold,
peering into a lit room
through a horizon-long
chink of light. Later,
liminal, bodies blazing,
we move in tandem
in that illuminated room.
